The truth about snow tires

'Snow tires' are now usually called winter tires. Here is why they matter and how to use them safely.

Are winter tires worth it?

Winter tires are designed for ice, snow, slush and low temperatures. All-season tires work in many conditions, including wet roads and light snow, but are not built for harsh winters despite the name.

What makes them different

Winter tires typically have deeper tread and tread patterns designed to move snow and slush. They also use compounds that stay flexible in the cold, where other tires stiffen.

Check pressure often

Tire pressure drops as the temperature falls. Keep your winter tires at the pressure on your vehicle's placard to protect tread life, fuel economy and safety.

Fit all four, not just two

Whether your vehicle is front-, rear- or all-wheel drive, fit four winter tires. Only two can leave the front and rear with different grip, which can cause a loss of control.

When to replace winter tires

Winter grip falls as the tread wears. The original guidance on this page said winter tires should be replaced around 6/32 inch of tread, and that at 2/32 inch they have little or no traction in snow. Check your tire maker's guidance for your tires.
