Do You Really Need Run Flat Tires

When it comes to tires for a BMW and many other vehicles, customers aren't pleased with the harsh ride and short tread life of the Original Equipment run-flat tires.

However, many owners are unsure if they're able to make the switch to a standard tire. The answer is not as difficult as you might think.

First, let's dispel the myth that run-flat tires never need air pressure. They do! Most run-flat tires can be driven on without air for up to 50 miles at up to 50 miles per hour.

The Advantages and Disadvantages of Run-Flat Tires

  • Run-flat tires are much more expensive than other tires; 40 to 75% more. ...
  • Because they're so heavy, they can reduce fuel economy.
  • The tread on run-flats does not typically last as long as on other tires.
  • They don't grip the road well when temperatures are colder.
  • They don't provide the most comfortable ride.

Can I put regular tires instead of run-flats?

The short answer: yes. Run-flat tires and regular tires that are the same numeric size will have the same physical dimensions and can fit properly on the same wheels. The only difference with run-flat wheels is they usually have an extra hump behind the bead seat.

Run-flat tires can be great insurance against getting stranded due to a flat, allowing you to get to a safe, convenient location for a tow or a tire replacement. They save space and a little gas. Sure, they can be expensive to replace, but not significantly more costly than comparable modern non-run-flat tires.

While typically fit luxury and sports cars, the J.D. Power study found that run-flat tires were replaced more often than conventional tires used on all types of cars. Run-flat tires wear-out about 6,000 miles earlier than conventional tires (which have an average tread life of 22,559 miles).

Are run-flat tires repairable? Run-flat tires are not repairable!

That's because, once they've been driven on without air pressure, they lose their structural integrity, making them unsuitable for a puncture repair. If they are patched up, it's highly likely they'll puncture again down the line due to uneven wear and loss of rigidity.

What PSI should run flat Tires be?

Your Owner's manual should specify pressures of 32 psi Front and 35 psi Rear for those tires at sustained speeds of under 100 mph with an average load.. the F/B differential is important.

Even with tougher rubber, run-flat tires do wear out quicker than regular tires. ... If buyers are experiencing wear at around 20,000 miles, that's less than half the life of an ordinary tire.

Why does my BMW not have a spare tire?

If you've purchased a new BMW in the past few years, chances are it doesn't have a spare tire. That's because BMWs are typically equipped with run-flat tires, which feature a stiff sidewall or internal reinforcement. Other automakers use run-flats, too, but BMW has become known for leading the charge.

BMWs and every other vehicle can make the switch to non-run-flat tires.

A solution to this issue is to purchase the Slime 40013 Smart Spair Emergency Tire Repair Kit. The kit is capable of comfortably sealing typical tire punctures, making it possible for you to complete the drive home, to work, or to a tire repair facility. It combines a powerful, high-volume, 12-volt air compressor, integral pressure gauge, and a latex liquid tire sealant packaged in a compact, lightweight unit that's easy to store in a vehicle.
