5 Easy Life Pro Tips That Will Make Your Tires Last Twice As Long

Tip #1 - Proper tire inflation

Let's face it, tires are expensive, and the longer we can make them last the better it is on our wallets! Most everyone drives a vehicle and all vehicles have tires, so this article is really going to help all that read it. Whether you have brand new tires or 5-year-old tires these tips will extend the life of your tires by at least double! The number one tire killer is low air pressure. Nobody and I mean almost nobody checks their tire's air pressure on a regular basis. Overinflation is also very bad for tires too but considering almost nobody checks their tire air pressure it's not as prevalent. I recommend checking your tire pressure at least every two weeks.

Underinflation "low air pressure" will kill your tires quickly because the inside and outside edges wear much faster since there's not enough air pressure to keep the sidewall from rolling-over when you go around curves. Once the damage is done, there's no coming back. This is very bad for Commercial Semi Tires as well.

Fill your tires correctly. Do you know what the best tire pressure is for your car? While your owner’s manual will list the correct pressure, you can also find it on a sticker attached to the edge of the driver’s side door or door jamb, glove box door, or fuel door.

Many newer vehicles also have a tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) which alerts you when your tire pressure is too low. If the warning light pops up on your dashboard, your tires will need immediate attention to avoid damage.

Proper tire inflation

Tip #2 - Tire Rotations

The second-fastest way to kill your tread life is to never rotate your tires. Tire rotations need to be done about every 5K to 7K miles or coordinated with your oil changes. We always tell customers to rotate their tires when they get their oil changed. Most people are using extended life oil which only needs changing 5K to 7K miles, much longer than the old 3,000 miles we used to recommend.

Convenience, it seems is the key for most people to actually get recommended vehicle services done. And you know, why not? We all are busier than ever before and it's tempting to just say, aww, I'll get that done next time I'm in lol... But one thing for sure, if you don't rotate the front tires to the back, the front tires are going to wear out 5 times as fast as the back!

And if your front tires have 5 times less tread depth than the back tires you're going to have to replace the front two first leaving the back tires worn probably half of more than the new ones you're having installed. Not good, because you're now in a vicious cycle of having disproportionate tread depth tires on your vehicle and the ride and handling will suck!

Tip #3 - Wheel Balancing

Balance your wheels! While alignment adjusts the angle of your wheels, balancing involves applying weights on the tire rim, inside and out. If your car begins to vibrate around 60 or 70 miles per hour, it’s time to get your tires balanced. Over time, your tires begin to change shape as they wear down due to normal aging of the front-end car parts, potholes, and hard braking.

You won't need to get this done as much as tire rotations because wheels stay balanced longer. I recommend having them balanced about every 3rd oil change or about every 20,000 miles or of course if you feel any strange vibration have the mechanic check for a balance problem during his inspection.

Wheel Balancing

Tip #4 - Vehicle Wheel Alignment

Getting your vehicle's wheels aligned is the 3rd most important maintenance item you need to be addressing whether getting a new set of tires or keeping the set you have in great shape. A misaligned vehicle can wear out the inside or outside edges of your tires prematurely and make your vehicle track on the road funny.

Have you ever seen a car or truck in front of you where the rear wheels look like they're running to the left or right of the center of the vehicle? That's a real bad misalignment lol!

If you experience your vehicle pulling or drifting to one side it's time to get your tires aligned. For most vehicles, alignment means correcting the subtle tilts in your car’s camber, caster, and toe-in or toe-out. Specialized equipment is used by your mechanic to correct the alignment, often in fractions of an inch.

You don't have to get an alignment every time you get new tires or even for periodic maintenance, you just need to get your alignment checked. If you haven't hit any curbs or potholes "hard" your alignment should still be OK. Don't spend your money needlessly. This article is all about saving you money not wasting it. Don't be talked into a repair you might not need. Make the tire shop show you the alignment results for your vehicle before agreeing to get this service.

Tip # 5 - Don't Drive On A Flat Tire And Avoid Road Hazards

Thanks to advanced tire technology, flat tires aren’t as common as they once were, but they do still happen. Driving on a flat tire can increase the damage which can cost you more money, and it poses a safety risk to yourself and other vehicles on the road. When you drive on a flat tire, the wheel rim pinches the tire close to the road and shreds the inside lining of the tire. The result? Instead of repairing a tire, you now have to replace it!

Of course, you never want to sacrifice your safety for the sake of your tire, so if you have to drive on it to get out of harm’s way, go ahead and do it until you reach safety.

If your vehicle is equipped with run-flat tires like a lot of BMW's this won't apply to you. But you may want to read our article on "Do You Really Need Run Flat Tires," because run-flats are expensive and ride hard.

Avoid road hazards. Unfortunately, you can’t control the quality of the roads you drive on or how often they are repaired. You’ll inevitably face potentially damaging surfaces on the road like debris or potholes. All potholes can damage automobile tires, but potholes on asphalt are the most destructive because they often times have sharp, penetrating edges. The edges of asphalt-road potholes force a tire to flex and stretch, which can cause abrasions, punctures, and tears. The faster you hit the potholes, the greater chance they have of damaging the tire or even blowing it out completely.

Eventually, buying new tires becomes unavoidable. You can lengthen the life of your tires with our 5 Easy Life Pro Tips That Will Make Your Tires Last Twice As Long, but don’t risk your safety by putting off buying new ones.
